Gibb River Road

Itinerary:

Day 1: This morning we commence early, departing Broome by 7am, after collecting everyone from their Broome accommodation. We head east along the Great Northern Highway before stopping briefly at Willare Bridge Roadhouse where we will cross the mighty Fitzroy River for the first time. Our next stop will be Derby, the location of the largest tidal variance in Australia and one of the highest in the world. Here we will discover some World War 2 history and visit the Boab Prison Tree. From here we begin a 5 day journey along the Gibb River Road. We will pass the ancient limestone reef, now the Napier Range and head deep into the King Leopold Ranges Conservation Reserve to the heart of the Kimberley where we will settle in for the evening.Mt Hart Homestead — Ensuited Safari Tents or Homestead Room with Shared Facilities.

Day 2: This morning we have time to explore this peaceful place, take a walk or even a swim in Barkers Pool. Mt Hart was a working cattle station which proved to be inviable and was eventually handed back before becoming a conservation reserve. Here you will hear the dingo’s howl and the birdwatchers amongst us will no doubt be delighted. We will settle in for the evening. Day 3: Today's journey is a drive to Bell Gorge, one of the most iconic gorges of the Gibb River Road.

After taking a relatively flat walk, you will be rewarded with the opportunity to take a swim in a magical Kimberley waterhole. The more adventurous may then choose to go further to the larger bottom waterhole. We will enjoy a picnic lunch in the perfect location. This afternoon you may like to visit the Imintji Art Centre where you can buy a souvenir of your visit directly from the artist. Day 4: Our first stop today is Galvin's Gorge for a refreshing dip. We continue our journey along the Gibb River Road before arriving at Home Valley Station, where we stay tonight. Home Valley Station is a training base for indigenous people to learn hospitality and pastoral skills. Home Valley Station — Guest Room

Day 5: We cross the Pentecost Crossing where I'm sure you will take a photo looking onto the amazing Cockburn Ranges. This morning we will soak in the warm waters of Zebedee Springs on El Questro Station. We visit the original town of the East Kimberley, Wyndham where we drive to the top of the Bastion Range to view the 5 major rivers of the East Kimberley entering the Cambridge Gulf. This afternoon we arrive in Kununurra, the newest town in Western Australia. Ivanhoe Village — Cabin (2 nights)

Day 6: Kununurra was born as part of the Ord irrigation Schemein the 1960’s. today we explore the integral parts of this, Lake Kununurra, the Ord River and Lake Argyle as we cruise, swim and enjoy a unique sunset on Kimberley Cat. Ivanhoe Village — Cabin (2 nights)

Day 7: Crossing the diversion dam and once again travelling the Great Northern Highway, this time through the spectacular Carr Boyd Ranges as we head towards the Bungle Bungles. We will spend time exploring part of the magnificent Purnululu National Park, home of the Bungle Bungle Range. We will take a walk through the Bee Hive Domes as we make our way into Cathedral Gorge. Tonight, we stay at a camp at the Bungles — Safari Tent or Halls Creek Safari Tents or Homestead Room with Shared Facilities.

Day 8: Today we will take a walk to Piccaninny Lookout will be rewarded with views over even more of the Domes and we will take a walk through the very special Echidna Chasm. Settle in at Halls Creek for a beautiful Kimberley dinner and our overnight stay at Halls Creek Motel.

Day 9: Gold was first discovered in Western Australia at Halls Creek in by Charlie Hall on Christmas Day in 1885. Today Halls Creek is a trading centre for this vast pastoral area. We will spend a little time here and visit the historic Old Halls Creek. This afternoon we will learn of the indigenous culture and bush tucker as we take a cruise on Geikie Gorge. This is our second encounter with the mighty Fitzroy River, which carved through this ancient limestone reef creating Geikie Gorge. Fitzroy River Lodge Ensuited Safari Tent.

Day 10: We start our final day early as we explore more of the Napier Range, an ancient limestone reef. We will take a walking tour through Tunnel Creek, Western Australia's oldest cave system, carved beneath the Napier Range by Tunnel Creek. Windjana Gorge is part of this same Devonian limestone reef system, carved by the Lennard River. This afternoon we make our way back to Broome where we bid farewell to new friends.
